MEDWAY’s customers prevent 143,000 tonnes of CO₂ from being released into the atmosphere
It has been yet another year in which MEDWAY’s partners have made a significant contribution to the
decarbonisation of the transport sector and to a more environmentally friendly future. With the aim of
recognising and valuing this important contribution, the company presented Sustainable Transport
Certificates to 50 customers, at a ceremony attended by the Secretary of State for the Environment,
João Manuel Esteves, and the president of the environmental association ZERO, Francisco Ferreira.
By choosing rail freight transport for their daily operations, MEDWAY’s customers prevented the
emission of over 143,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere by 2025.
Since its creation 10 years ago, MEDWAY has reinforced its commitment to sustainability and the
crucial role that rail transport plays in promoting more efficient logistics. These certificates represent a
shared vision of a more sustainable future for all and demonstrate that it is possible to develop business
models that are economically and financially competitive whilst maintaining a high sense of environmental
and social responsibility.
The president of MEDWAY expressed his gratitude to MEDWAY’s customers and partners, who are
essential to fulfilling this mission, and emphasised that ‘rail transport is today, without a doubt, the key
solution for the decarbonisation of the transport sector’. Carlos Vasconcelos highlighted a paradox
currently facing the country that urgently needs to be addressed: “Portugal is committed to decarbonisation,
yet subsidies and tax breaks continue to be granted to fossil fuels, whilst the most efficient and cleanest
mode of transport (rail) faces tariff barriers that hinder its competitiveness”.
The Secretary of State for the Environment noted that “investing in rail reduces CO₂ emissions and
road traffic and makes the economy more competitive”, and the results achieved by MEDWAY’s clients
demonstrate this. João Manuel Esteves emphasised that the Government “is committed to accelerating
the transition towards carbon neutrality” and is “open to finding solutions for the future”.

This is your contribution to saving the planet!
