For the first time in Portugal, semi-trailers have been transported by train, a pioneering operation connecting Spain with Entroncamento, via Badajoz, along the Eastern Line.
This achievement has been made possible thanks to the collaboration between TRANSITALIA, TRAMESA and MEDWAY, marking a decisive stage in the expansion and modernisation strategy of the three companies.
This operation —unique in the country— required extraordinary technical and operational preparation, as this type of cargo has very different dimensions and requirements from those of conventional container transport.
In addition, it was carried out on a non-electrified line and under a telephone block system, without automatic speed control or radio communications between ground and train, which reinforces the technical and operational value of the project.
“The coordination between the Portuguese and Spanish teams, together with rigorous planning and execution, was decisive for the success of this initiative. We are very proud of this milestone and would like it to be recorded as an example of our teams’ strategic vision, technical expertise and dedication, inspiring the future of rail freight transport in the country,” Carlos Vasconcelos, President of MEDWAY.
With this new development, MEDWAY reaffirms its leadership in rail freight transport in the Iberian Peninsula, consolidating its commitment to sustainable, efficient and innovative intermodal solutions, serving the competitiveness and logistical development of the region.
