Pilot stick

Witness (originally made of iron) that was used to guarantee that on a certain special single-track section, such as a bridge, only one train would run at a time. The pilot pole was carried by the driver who, at the end of the journey, would hand it over to the driver of the other waiting train who, only after receiving it, would start the journey.
